Vessel

Vessel

10 x 9.5 x 10 feet, wood, hardware, and paint, 2020

In 2020, The Southern Branch of the National Palace Museum in Taibao City, Taiwan, commissioned this sculpture for their permanent outdoor exhibition, The Arc of Art. One of nine invited artists, the museum asked Holiber to look at items from their permanent collection for inspiration and guidance on his site-specific work. Holiber was immediately drawn to the ancient Chinese bronze ceremonial vessels (Gui food containers) and the ornately decorated ceramic vases, which were created several thousand years apart. Holiber remarks:

“At this large scale, my sculpture loses its functionality and becomes a symbol for what it carries; creativity and expression. The decorated vases that inspired this piece, depict scenes of the artist’s nearby environment, as does the pattern I’ve made. Vessel is a documentary of contemporary times while looking to the past for inspiration.”
